Job description

About Baselane

Baselane is a fast-growing banking and financial management platform created for individual landlords and real estate investors. The company is supported by prominent FinTech investors such as Matrix Partners, Activant Capital, Collaborative Fund, Conversion Capital, Diagram Ventures, ThomVest, and several industry leaders from PayPal, eBay, Google, and other well-known organizations.

Baselane is developing the next generation of financial services for more than 12 million individual landlords and real estate investors who collectively own over 25 million homes across the United States. Its mission is to help landlords save time, improve returns, and expand their portfolios through financial services, automation, and actionable insights.

The team brings strong backgrounds in financial services and technology, with prior experience at organizations including The Boston Consulting Group, Morgan Stanley, Plaid, Harry’s, Better, WealthSimple, RBC Ventures, Affirm, NorthOne, and Instawork.

About the Role

Baselane is looking for a Senior Manager, Fraud & Payments Risk to own the fraud function, lead the team, and drive cross-functional initiatives that strengthen the company’s risk program over the long term. As the business grows, the risk landscape becomes more complex, so this role will build on an existing foundation of sound processes across the banking and rent collection products by expanding automation, improving detection, and scaling operations in step with the company.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the Fraud & Payments Risk team directly, including performance management, coaching, and development for two Risk Specialists and one Risk Lead.
  • Work as both leader and individual contributor by handling complex investigations, escalations, and unfamiliar case types, while also supporting the Lead and Specialists as a trusted advisor.
  • Shape and deliver major improvements to the risk program, including better detection tools, stronger decisioning systems, and scalable processes.
  • Work closely with Product, Engineering, and CX to turn fraud insights into lasting controls and to represent risk priorities across the company.
  • Take charge of significant fraud incidents, including high-value cases of $50K or more, matters with regulatory sensitivity, and coordination with bank partners; document findings with root cause analysis and prevention steps.
  • Own the relationship with the sponsor bank on fraud and risk matters, including guideline alignment, audits, and collaboration on shared workstreams such as KYC/KYB signals, sanctions screening, and transaction monitoring.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of relevant experience in fraud, payments risk, or financial crime, preferably within fintech, payments, or digital banking.
  • Background working in start-up or fast-paced fintech environments where priorities shift quickly and solutions must be built without a large organizational safety net.
  • Proven people management experience leading fraud or risk teams, ideally during growth phases, while developing strong individual contributors and maintaining high standards.
  • Strong judgment in assessing identity documents, behavioral patterns, and complex cases.
  • Deep understanding of payment rails and the rules and risks tied to ACH, wire transfers, debit cards, and check fraud, along with regulatory frameworks such as Reg E and Reg CC.
  • Comfort building and scaling a function from an early stage rather than only maintaining an established operation.
  • Data-driven decision-making skills and the ability to work effectively with a lean data team.
  • Strong operator mindset with the ability to move quickly, manage ambiguity, and build processes without a complete playbook.

Nice to Have

  • Exposure to compliance signals that inform fraud decisions, such as OFAC, PEP, and adverse media screening.
  • Hands-on experience with modern fraud decisioning platforms such as Taktile, Sigma, TLOxp, or similar tools.
  • Experience with real estate, property management, or fraud patterns related to rent payments.

Benefits & Perks

  • Competitive pay.
  • Equity ownership in the business.
  • Medical, vision, and dental coverage of strong quality.
  • Life insurance and disability coverage.
  • Generous paid time off and flexible working hours.
  • Remote-first setup with a home office stipend.
  • Regular social events.
