About the Position
The Department of Justice and Attorney-General (DoJ) seeks two dedicated Senior Legal Officers to significantly contribute to law reform efforts within its Strategic Policy and Legislation (SPL) division. SPL's broad mandate encompasses supporting Queensland's justice system operation and spearheading the development and roll-out of legislative proposals across both primary and subordinate legislation within the justice portfolio.
In this role, you will focus on developing and executing legislative and policy initiatives concerning criminal law and matters relating to criminal justice. The position offers a flexible work environment, including options for telecommuting part of the workweek, alongside attractive employment conditions.
Role Context
SPL includes specialized teams that handle distinct elements of policy and legislation, such as criminal law and a dedicated Human Rights Unit. The criminal law teams are engaged in law and policy formulation covering criminal code, sentencing laws, criminal procedures, jurisdictional matters, organised crime, drug misuse, and numerous facets of criminal justice reform. Your appointment will be within one of the criminal law-focused policy and legislation teams, aligned with SPL’s operational priorities.
Primary Responsibilities
- Deliver expert counsel on complex criminal justice policy matters, proposing innovative strategies, initiatives, and policy options.
- Lead legislative and policy project development and implementation related to criminal justice and criminal law reform.
Candidate Profile
- Demonstrated capacity to grasp critical and emerging issues in criminal law and criminal justice policy, appreciating their effects on government and community stakeholders.
- Proven or transferable strategic advisory skills to analyze comprehensive, complex policy and legislative alternatives, especially within the criminal law realm.
- Effective project management skills with the agility to prioritize and complete assignments within fixed deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal skills fostering productive partnerships with internal teams and external stakeholders to aid policy formulation.
- Exceptional oral and written communication abilities paired with high-level negotiation skills; able to work independently and collaboratively.
