About the Role

This opportunity is based at ASB's modern head office located on Auckland's waterfront. It is a 12-month fixed term contract with some flexibility to work from home.

We are seeking experienced Senior Legal Counsels to join ASB's dynamic and collaborative in-house legal team that supports banking operations with high efficiency and collegiality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice principally to the retail and business banking divisions, aiding with product and lending queries, digital initiatives, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations, including those addressing climate change and fraud prevention.
  • Manage a diverse range of legal matters related to banking and finance, financial services regulation, financial crime, litigation, and commercial law.
  • Build and sustain productive relationships with various internal clients and offer responsive, sound legal counsel.
  • Collaborate with external legal advisors and consultants as necessary.

Candidate Profile

  • Possess at least 10 years of relevant legal experience in private practice or in-house roles, ideally with knowledge of the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act 2003 and/or Financial Markets Conduct Act 2013, or demonstrate a strong interest in developing in these areas.
  • Exhibit strong lateral thinking, adaptability, and confidence to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Skilled at cultivating effective professional relationships with diverse stakeholders including senior leadership and project managers.
  • Have or be eligible to hold a New Zealand practicing certificate as a lawyer.
  • Experience in the financial services sector is preferred but not essential.
