Job Overview
The Senior Horticulturist Engineer will head horticultural planning, oversee supervision, and maintain quality control across landscape projects, including infrastructure developments, urban spaces, public realms, and commercial sites. This role involves ensuring that planting designs, implementations, and upkeep align with project requirements, sustainability standards, and local environmental factors, while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and contractors.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead horticultural contributions to landscape projects by advising on planting design, suitable species, and maintenance approaches.
- Review and approve plant selections, planting layouts, and horticultural specifications ensuring compatibility with local climate, soil, and arid environmental conditions.
- Oversee on-site planting activities involving various plant types such as trees, shrubs, turf, and specialized installations like rooftop and vertical gardens.
- Evaluate plant health and recommend necessary actions such as pruning, replacements, soil enhancements, and pest or disease treatments.
- Coordinate horticultural operations with other disciplines including landscape architecture, irrigation, civil engineering, architecture, and MEP to avoid conflicts and guarantee integrated execution.
- Carry out regular inspections and quality audits to ensure compliance with project standards and horticultural best practices.
- Assess delivered nursery stock for quality, size, and health against approved samples.
- Provide guidance on soil preparation, mulching, fertilization, and establishing plants effectively.
- Assist with developing and implementing maintenance schedules covering irrigation, pruning, pest management, and seasonal planting.
- Monitor contractor progress for horticulture-related work, detect issues, and supervise corrective actions.
- Prepare detailed technical documentation including reports, plant health assessments, and conceptual material with visual aids.
- Offer horticultural advice during testing, commissioning, and project handover to clients or authorities.
- Ensure adherence to health, safety, environmental, and quality standards within landscaping activities.
- Mentor junior landscape and horticulture personnel providing technical support as required.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture preferred or a closely related discipline, or equivalent experience and training.
- A minimum of 12 years' experience managing large landscape projects focused on preservation and maintenance.
- Strong expertise in working within arid environments, understanding appropriate plant material suitability and performance.
- Capability to interpret complex contract documentation, including plans, specifications, and shop drawings.
- Ability to examine drawings and installations for constructability and alignment with design intent.
- Experience in urban design supervision, especially in premium commercial landscaping projects.
- Skilled in preparing reports and submissions featuring conceptual and horticultural visual content.
- Proficient in software such as Vectorworks, AutoCAD, Microsoft Office Suite, and modern digital imaging/visualization tools.
- Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
- Required UPDA/MME registration for Qatar-based work.
Preferred Additional Skills
- Experience working in the GCC region with an appreciation for its cultural heritage related to public realm and landscape design.
- Background in large infrastructure, public parks, streetscape improvements, highways, and stadium precinct landscape projects.
- Knowledge of sustainable horticulture methods like water-efficient planting, biodiversity promotion, and integrated pest management.
- Strong collaboration abilities involving contractors, nurseries, and multi-disciplinary teams.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and quality control expertise.
- Capacity to manage multiple site activities simultaneously and meet project deadlines effectively.
