Job description
Role overview
Massey University’s People & Culture function works with leaders across the institution to build a positive, inclusive, and high-performing environment. The team blends strategic thinking with practical delivery to support employees, strengthen organisational capability, and drive excellence.
This opportunity is for an experienced Senior Employment Relations Analyst to join the Employment Relations team. The position is suited to someone who can use evidence, policy, and insight to shape decisions and help maintain a fair, compliant, and forward-looking workplace.
Key focus of the role
Reporting to the Associate Director Employment Relations, you will contribute across both strategic and operational work. Your responsibilities will include turning complex employment data into useful insights, creating and maintaining employment policies, supporting collective bargaining activity, and working with leaders to improve employment practices across the university.
The role is broad and combines analysis, policy work, relationship management, and ongoing improvement. You will work alongside HR specialists, senior leaders, governance groups, and external parties to deliver practical outcomes that create real value for the organisation.
What you will need to succeed
- Proven background handling complex employment relations issues.
- Strong understanding of New Zealand employment law and employment relations best practice.
- Advanced ability to analyse and interpret large, complex workforce datasets and convert findings into clear employment relations strategies that support risk management and decision-making.
- Excellent Microsoft Excel capability.
- Strong written communication skills and experience developing policies.
- Ability to develop trusted relationships and influence stakeholders at all levels.
- A continuous improvement approach with a focus on enhancing systems, services, and organisational capability.
Why join Massey University
In addition to a competitive salary, the role offers a range of employee benefits, including employer superannuation contributions of up to 6.75% to UniSaver for eligible staff, five extra university holidays each year, subsidised Southern Cross Healthcare, professional development opportunities, staff study benefits, family fee concessions, and access to campus facilities such as gym memberships and childcare at eligible campuses.
You will also join a collaborative, values-driven team that is focused on improvement, innovation, and making a meaningful contribution across one of New Zealand’s leading universities. The People & Culture team works in agile ways and places customers at the centre of its approach.
Pay and grading
Appointment will be made according to skills and experience within Grade 7, with a salary band of $83,818 to $117,788.
