About the Role
The Senior Director of Finance at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) plays a pivotal role in guiding the organization’s financial strategy and daily fiscal operations. Working closely with the Senior Vice President of Finance, executive team members, and the Board, this leader is responsible for upholding strong internal controls, overseeing compliance, and delivering insightful financial information that shapes the organization’s direction. This position has direct oversight over the accounting team and serves as a key advisor within the Finance and Administration division.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct the preparation, review, and timely distribution of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, ensuring adherence to U.S. GAAP and FASB rules for nonprofits.
- Interpret financial performance, highlight discrepancies and areas for cost optimization, and provide actionable insights to leadership.
- Oversee monthly cash reconciliations and review journal entries as needed.
- Ensure appropriate accounting treatment for transactions, including compliance with ASC 606 and ASC 842 standards.
- Spearhead the annual audit, facilitate the preparation and review of IRS Form 990 filings, and refine internal accounting policies.
- Design and execute an annual risk and compliance evaluation alongside senior leaders.
- Collaborate with program staff to develop grant budgets, monitor restricted funds, and generate donor reports.
- Manage organizational contracts, ensuring all financial stipulations are thoroughly vetted.
- Administer and enhance accounting systems such as Financial Edge and overall process automation, while overseeing payables, receivables, payroll, and retirement plans.
- Lead and develop a skilled finance team, driving organizational efficiency and ethical practices.
- Advise executive stakeholders with thorough analysis, financial modeling, and tailored presentations.
- Support administrative colleagues on human resources, facilities, and legal matters.
- Nurture a culture focused on integrity, accuracy, and continuous learning within the finance department.
Qualifications
Essential:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
- Active CPA license in good standing.
- At least 10 years of progressive accounting and financial management experience in the nonprofit sector, with significant team leadership responsibilities.
- Hands-on public accounting experience with exposure to nonprofit audits.
- Expert understanding of nonprofit-specific GAAP, including ASC 606 and ASC 842.
- Demonstrated success leading audits and overseeing IRS Form 990 filings.
- Solid track record in supervising and mentoring financial professionals.
Preferred:
- Background in foundations or similar mission-driven nonprofits.
- Experience using Blackbaud Financial Edge or Financial Edge NXT.
- Advanced degree (Master’s) in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
- Familiarity with grant management, restricted funds, and donor reporting.

Additional Information
- This position is based in a standard office setting and involves frequent use of general office technology.
- The role may require sitting for lengthy periods, regular communication face-to-face and via digital platforms, and the occasional lifting of up to 15 pounds.
