Role Overview

The Search and Rescue (SAR) Aircrew Officer plays a pivotal technical role in conducting critical helicopter operations including Search and Rescue, Emergency Medical Services, Rappelling, Sling Loading, Passenger Transport, and Winching. Reporting to the aircraft captain, the Aircrew Officer ensures the safe and effective management of the aircraft’s rear cabin and operations during flight. Assignments span diverse and sometimes high-pressure onshore and offshore environments, often confronting complex emergencies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain qualifications as both Aircrew Officer and Rescue Crew Officer.
  • Comply fully with company policies, operational manuals, and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in managing rear cabin safety and cargo during flights.
  • Deliver briefings related to flight safety and operations.
  • Possess comprehensive knowledge and proficient use of search and rescue equipment.
  • Conduct thorough pre-flight and post-flight inspections along with accurate reporting of safety or maintenance issues.
  • Provide first aid where necessary, performing under demanding and stressful conditions.
  • Travel as required to various CHC bases for training and deployment.
  • Complete periodic company-mandated fitness evaluations.
  • Act as a safety advocate, challenging unsafe behavior and promoting a positive safety culture.
  • Perform additional duties as necessary to support operational needs.

Essential Qualifications and Certifications

  • Current CASA Class II medical certification.
  • Current certifications in Provide Advanced Resuscitation and Oxygen (HLTAID015) and Provide First Aid (HLTAID011).
  • Valid Flight Radiotelephone Operator’s Licence.
  • CASA-approved hoist endorsement compliant with CASR PART 133/138.
  • SLS Bronze Medallion or Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue).
  • Class 1 Driver’s License.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • Certificate IV in Aviation (CASA compliance).
  • Experience in SAR and Emergency Medical Services.
  • Training in Helicopter Underwater Escape Techniques (H.U.E.T) and use of Emergency Breathing Systems (EBS).
  • Night Vision Imaging System (NVIS) qualification and night operations experience.
  • Experience operating FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared) imagery systems.

Skills and Attributes

  • Minimum age 18 years and at least 500 hours of aircrew experience.
  • Ability to pass company physical fitness assessments regularly.
  • Strong communication, planning, organization, and critical thinking capabilities.
  • Proficiency with relevant IT systems and multitasking under urgent circumstances.
  • Safety-focused mindset, proactive physical and mental wellness maintenance, and a growth-oriented attitude.
  • Team collaboration, resilience under pressure, independent working capability, adaptability, and respectful conduct.
