Position Details

The Philipps University of Marburg, established in 1527 and hosting around 22,000 students, invites applications for a part-time (65%) position as a Scientific Research Associate (PhD candidate) within the Graduate Research College "Nucleotide Metabolism in Microbes" (GRK 2937, "MiNu"), funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). This role commences on October 1, 2026, and is limited to 3 years, subject to prior qualifications. The salary is aligned with pay group E 13 TV-H of the Hessian state collective agreement.

Research Focus

The project investigates nucleotides, the chemical building blocks of cellular cofactors and nucleic acids (DNA, RNA), across various microbes to understand general principles and species-specific adaptations of nucleotide metabolism and modification mechanisms.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and independently develop a research project with high autonomy.
  • Study cell cycle-dependent activation of nucleotide-binding proteins in Bacillus subtilis using advanced biochemical techniques.
  • Employ super-resolution fluorescence microscopy and single-molecule tracking with microfluidic flow chambers to analyze the dynamics of key bacterial cell cycle regulatory proteins.
  • Characterize changes in nucleotide pools related to the cell cycle within multidisciplinary, international collaborations.
  • Communicate research outcomes internationally through publications and participation in conferences.
  • Support teaching activities, including seminars for students.

Candidate Profile

  • Completed university degree (Diploma, Master's or equivalent) in Biology, Biochemistry or Chemistry with focus on Biochemistry or Microbiology.
  • Experience working with microorganisms.
  • Proficient in molecular biology techniques like cloning and biochemical methods such as protein purification.
  • Motivated team player with curiosity, strong self-drive, and commitment to advancing the research.
  • Experience or keen interest in cell biology techniques, including fluorescence microscopy.
  • Ideally, programming skills in languages such as R or MATLAB.
  • Willingness to engage in scientific qualification through a PhD project focusing on biochemistry/microbiology with an emphasis on cell biology.
