Key duties

  • Carry out minor construction tasks such as building or repairing floodgates, pump flaps, retaining walls, timber structures, and fencing.
  • Inspect and maintain flood pumps, floodgates, sluice gates, lifting gear, pump stations, streams, drainage assets, rivers, fences, and small plant.
  • Perform chainsaw and tree-felling work.
  • Handle vegetation management tasks, including planting, releasing, weed control, and spot spraying.
  • Spray the drainage network managed by Waikato Regional Council.
  • Complete erosion control and soil stability activities.
  • Respond to emergencies and events, including Civil Defence duties.
  • Work as part of a team that values initiative, responsiveness, a practical approach, and getting things done.

What the role offers

  • Strong opportunities for career development and progression.
  • Training support, including first aid and agrichemical handling (Growsafe).

About you

You should be a confident swimmer and bring a positive, safety-first mindset. The role suits someone who works well with others, is physically capable of hands-on outdoor work, and can communicate professionally when dealing with landowners.

Qualifications and experience

  • A full New Zealand driver’s licence is required.
  • Basic computer skills are needed to use an iPad, phone apps, and electronic timesheets.
  • Good customer service skills are important because the role involves regular contact with landowners from time to time.
  • You must be willing to work beyond a standard 40-hour week on occasion.
  • Experience in construction, tree felling, and chainsaw use is preferred but not essential.
  • Experience with plant and machinery is preferred but not essential.
  • Experience in weed spraying, vegetation management, fencing, and general land management is preferred but not essential.
