Job Overview

Working under the direction of the Paint Shop Supervisor at Hale Centre Theatre in West Valley City, UT, the Scenic Artist / Painter is tasked with the visual treatment and artistic finishing of scenic components following design requirements and paint elevation instructions.

Key Responsibilities

• Apply artistic finishes to scenic pieces according to specified design blueprints and paint elevations.
• Perform a variety of painting techniques including base coating, texturing, faux finishing, aging, graphic application, and detailed brushwork.
• Adhere to the paint schedule managed by the Paint Shop Supervisor and actively update them on the progress of daily tasks.
• Collaborate effectively as part of the build team with an emphasis on scenic art skills.
• Mix and match painting colors precisely, maintaining accurate documentation of paint formulas and surface coverage.
• Ensure that all paintshop tools, equipment, and workspace are kept in optimal condition, report needs or malfunctions promptly.
• Complete assigned duties promptly and efficiently as instructed by the Paint Shop Supervisor.
• Provide assistance to other shop sections when needed, including supporting production teams during load-in and load-out phases.
• Maintain cleanliness and safety in the work environment by strictly following the theatre's safety protocols and policies.

Qualifications and Skills

• Demonstrated expertise in scenic painting techniques and methods of application.
• Proficient in various texturing methods used in scenic art.
• Ability to interpret and work from detailed paint elevation drawings accurately.
• Capable of working independently while effectively receiving instructions within a collaborative team setting.
• Excellent communication skills for coordinating with supervisors and team members.
• Availability to work during weekdays with occasional weekend shifts as required.
• Preferred experience using scissor lifts; training for use will be provided if needed.
• Preferred familiarity with basic projection technology to assist paint layouts.
• Strong motivation to refine existing artistic skills and eagerness to acquire new ones.
• Exceptional problem-solving abilities combined with time management and resourcefulness.
• Must successfully pass a background check and drug test prior to employment commencement.

Physical Demands

• Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance.
• Capability to stand for long durations and perform physical postures such as kneeling, crouching, and bending.
• Comfortable working at elevated positions using scissor lifts and ladders safely.
• Ability to work while standing on painted floor surfaces and reach overhead areas.
