About the Role

AngloGold Ashanti (Ghana) Limited at Obuasi Gold Mine is undergoing redevelopment to establish a modern, efficient, and sustainable mining operation. The underground mine is fully mechanized and aims to produce an average maximum of 5,000 tonnes of ore per day. We are recruiting a Safety Officer to oversee occupational health and safety compliance in the underground mining environment and to strengthen our safety department's capacity.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in maintaining the section's health and safety management systems in line with OSHAS18001 or ISO45001 standards.
  • Carry out regular OHS inspections within assigned underground sections and generate detailed inspection reports with timelines for remediation.
  • Manage risk assessments according to the Obuasi Mine Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment and Control Procedures.
  • Respond promptly to accidents or incidents underground, prepare initial incident notifications, and lead incident investigations ensuring timely reporting.
  • Upload investigation recommendations into the Workforce Management Reporting System (WMRS) and track implementation of corrective actions by submitting evidence of completion.
  • Provide safety training and induction sessions for the section; maintain comprehensive training records.
  • Coordinate with contractors to ensure compliance with AngloGold Ashanti Ghana's OHS audit requirements, conduct contractor audits, and prepare audit reports with improvement recommendations.
  • Support the Emergency Management Services (EMS) team by developing mock emergency scenarios to assess readiness and producing debrief reports identifying non-conformances and improvement opportunities.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Possession of a Certificate of Competency issued by the Ghana Minerals Commission.
  • Health & Safety certification such as NEBSOH IGC or CSP.
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Physical Science, Health, Safety & Environment, or a related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • A valid Ghanaian driver's license with capability to operate vehicles underground.
  • At least 3 years of experience in underground mining operations with demonstrated supervisory abilities and knowledge in hazard identification, hazard controls, and risk management.

Technical Skills

  • Audit and inspection experience including formal external safety or lead auditor training, participation in audits at other sites, and ability to develop effective workplace inspection systems.
  • Incident investigation skills supported by successful completion of an Incident Investigation Professional (IIP) training course, capable of leading investigations for moderate to high-severity incidents and assisting with major event investigations.
  • Competency in analyzing leading and lagging safety indicators to generate actionable short-term safety improvement plans and develop team work plans to achieve safety objectives.
