Job description
Overview
Join the Optimus actuator team as a skilled and motivated Manufacturing Engineer specializing in geartrain production. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams including Design, Quality, Production, Sustaining, and Supply Chain throughout the product lifecycle—from design and prototyping to full-scale manufacturing—focusing on gearbox manufacturing processes. This role aims to develop scalable production methods that enable transitioning from prototypes to high-volume, world-class gearbox production.
Primary Responsibilities
- Lead in-house manufacturing technology and process development for complex gear assemblies.
- Create scalable manufacturing processes that evolve from concept to high-volume production for gearboxes.
- Implement and validate manufacturing methods in low volume, high-mix environments.
- Define equipment requirements and collaborate with suppliers and internal teams for machine tool and tooling development suitable for automotive-level production scales.
- Manage specifications and Request for Quote (RFQ) procedures for acquiring new manufacturing equipment.
- Design and fabricate tooling used in gearbox assembly operations.
- Provide design feedback to engineering teams on Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) considerations.
- Document and monitor development activities in geartrain assembly, machining, and heat treatment processes and communicate findings as needed.
- Create validation plans for manufacturing equipment, heat treatment processes, inspection, and testing.
- Oversee the installation, commissioning, and handoff of factory production equipment.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
- Strong problem-solving skills grounded in first principles thinking.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD tools, preferably Catia/3DX or SolidWorks; familiarity with CAM software such as Mastercam or Esprit is advantageous.
- Knowledge of gear design and manufacturing software like KissSoft or Dontyne Gear Production Suite is a plus.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings with GD&T, especially assemblies including bearings, gearboxes, and actuators.
- Expertise in mechanical assembly techniques including press fits and fastener selection.
- Experience with gear metrology practices, torque tools, fixture design, CNC and automation equipment, control systems, and communication protocols.
- Strong foundation in manufacturing-oriented mechanical design and materials science, supporting transitions from prototype to mass production.
- Extensive understanding of heat treatment methods, material failure analysis, and hands-on operation of heat treatment machinery such as induction hardening stations.
- Years of experience in process design, tooling, and production line construction for geared products including heat treatment and line commissioning.
- Proficient English communication skills, both written and spoken.
- Willingness and ability to travel internationally on a regular basis.
