Job description

Role overview

Join The AA as a Roadside Rescue Mechanic and help motorists get moving again when they need support the most. This position is focused on delivering fast, reassuring roadside help across a range of locations, weather conditions and situations. You will be the first point of contact for members in trouble, combining practical mechanical expertise with calm, clear communication to create a positive experience.

The role offers a guaranteed base salary of £42,976 including location allowance, with total on-target earnings of up to £60,000 for top performers.

Working pattern

This is a patrol role with an average working week of 40 hours. A selection of shift pattern options is available, giving you flexibility to choose a schedule that fits your personal and work commitments. Rest days and shift lengths will differ depending on the pattern you select.

Key duties

You will work independently in varied locations while remaining connected to a supportive team. The job involves diagnosing issues on the spot, applying technical know-how to roadside breakdowns, and guiding members through the recovery process with confidence and professionalism.

Requirements

Applicants need a level 3 NVQ in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, or an equivalent qualification supported by relevant experience. A full category B driving licence is essential, and you must have 6 points or fewer on your licence. You should also be comfortable learning and using new technology, and be available for shifts that may include evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays.

Benefits

As part of The AA, you can access a wide range of rewards and support, including annual standby hours preferences, paid leave that starts at 23 days and increases with service, a holiday purchase scheme, and a Worksave pension with employer contributions of up to 7%. You will also receive free AA breakdown membership from day one, plus a 50% discount for family and friends.

Additional perks include savings on AA insurance products, a wider employee discount platform with access to car salary sacrifice, healthcare, shopping and holiday offers, company-funded life assurance, learning and development support, an employee assistance programme, and a 24/7 remote GP service for you and your family.

Additional information

The AA welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and is committed to an inclusive workplace where people can be themselves and feel they belong. The hiring process includes a short online application, followed by an online interview if you are shortlisted, along with standard pre-employment checks such as references, credit screening and criminal record screening.

Guaranteed first-year earnings include the relevant location allowance and a £1,000 sign-on bonus in eligible locations. The on-target earnings figure includes standby pay, performance incentives and overtime, and will depend on your performance and the hours you work.
