Role overview
This position sits within the risk function, which works across products, functions, and regions to monitor frontline performance and help keep the business operating safely. The role focuses on supporting a growing retail credit portfolio in New Zealand and on shaping risk-adjusted return decisions, preventive actions, and response measures that influence portfolio performance and profitability within the second line of defence.
What you will do
- Oversee retail credit exposure and keep it aligned with the approved risk appetite.
- Work with the Risk Modelling team to create, refine, and roll out retail credit risk models.
- Help define and monitor risk appetite through limits, while maintaining related policies, procedures, and controls.
- Support the operation of relevant risk committees.
- Collaborate with first-line teams to spot, track, and govern new and emerging retail credit risks, including assessments for new products.
- Engage with stakeholders, committees, and regional regulators on material credit exposures and limit governance topics.
- Measure organisational risk exposure while considering the impact on stakeholders.
- Help protect the company from taking on unnecessary risk and reduce both immediate and longer-term costs.
- Strengthen trust and credibility with external stakeholders.
- Flag emerging risks that need urgent action.
What you need
- Proven experience managing the full risk cycle for retail credit products such as credit cards or unsecured personal loans.
- Strong understanding of credit policy governance and how to work effectively across the three lines of defence.
- Good knowledge of New Zealand credit risk regulations, common issues, and core methodologies.
- Ability to deliver strong outcomes, plan across multiple priorities, and proactively solve problems.
- Experience with behavioural scoring models used in retail credit.
- A clear, structured communication style with the ability to explain complex topics simply.
- Comfort working in fast-moving, collaborative environments.
- A data-led approach to analysis and decision-making.
Nice to have
Experience with SQL, R, Python, or similar analytical tools is a plus, along with a willingness to pick up new technologies.
