These are permanent opportunities available in both full-time and part-time formats, with a range of shift patterns. Weekend availability is required for all shifts.

The pay range for these roles is $90,000 to $107,000 per year plus superannuation, depending on the roster. Full-time employees also receive a monthly rostered day off.

As part of a fast-growing and culturally diverse local council, you will help deliver a high-quality service to the Hume community through customer assistance, plant operation, material handling, waste sorting, site presentation, and safe day-to-day centre operations.

Key duties

  • Run the resource recovery centre in line with operational, environmental, and safety laws, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Carry out opening routines so the site is ready and accessible to the public during the scheduled operating hours.
  • Complete closing tasks to ensure all staff, customers, and contractors have left before the site is secured.
  • Check incoming loads, direct vehicles to the correct disposal area, and refuse prohibited or unsuitable materials as required.
  • Sort, recover, and move items suitable for resale through the Recycled Goods Store.
  • Manage traffic movement on site, including vehicles, pedestrians, and plant and equipment.
  • Keep the facility clean, tidy, and well presented, including collecting litter.
  • Remove contaminants according to training and site procedures.
  • Support customers with unloading, manual handling, and locating the right disposal points.
  • Help maintain a safe workplace by identifying and reporting hazards, near misses, and incidents.

Skills and experience

  • Working knowledge of waste management, recycling, or resource recovery centre/transfer station operations.
  • Strong understanding of occupational health and safety obligations and the ability to apply them in operational settings.
  • Ability to identify recyclable and recoverable materials within mixed waste streams.
  • Professional and courteous customer service approach that supports a positive public image.
  • Physical capability to perform manual handling and other practical duties.
  • Competence operating plant and equipment such as forklifts, front-end loaders/backhoes, and excavators, preferably in a similar environment.
  • Ability to work independently through the day while also cooperating with team members, contractors, suppliers, and customers to meet short-term objectives.
  • Capacity to work to scheduled routines that support continuous operations.
  • Commitment to safe work practices and the ability to respond appropriately to OHS issues.

Required qualifications and experience

  • Previous experience in waste management, recycling, resource recovery, or transfer station operations.
  • Background in frontline customer service, including conflict resolution.
  • Proven experience working in line with occupational health and safety and environmental protection rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Current driver’s licence is mandatory; off-road 4x4 driving experience is preferred.
  • Current forklift, front-end loader, and/or excavator licences, along with operating experience on this equipment.

  • Competitive remuneration package with superannuation.
  • Professional development opportunities.
  • Supportive workplace culture.
  • Inclusive, collaborative, and values-driven environment.
