Job description
Role overview
This is a permanent full-time position within the Turf Management team at Hume City Council, based in Sunbury, Victoria. The package is $71,490 per year plus superannuation.
Hume City Council is among the country’s fastest expanding and most culturally diverse local governments. The organisation places customers and the community at the centre of its work, with a strong focus on delivering services that are efficient, accessible, and community-focused.
Because the council operates across a large and varied service area, employees are exposed to different environments, projects, and operational challenges. This creates ongoing opportunities to build skills, progress professionally, and explore different pathways across the organisation.
The work area covers park upgrades, sports field upkeep, irrigation-related projects, and broader park maintenance activities. Team members are encouraged to contribute ideas, collaborate with others, and approach work in fresh and practical ways.
The workplace values respect, accountability, mentoring, and shared achievement. The council also aims to support work-life balance through structured operations, varied tasks, and opportunities to learn new tools and techniques.
What you will do
- Look after assigned reserves, streetscapes, and recreation spaces so they remain well maintained and improved.
- Use tractors, front deck mowers, trucks, brush cutters, and other park maintenance equipment to support council assets.
- Clear litter, branches, and other debris before mowing and remove waste from the site.
- Apply weed control using a knapsack sprayer when needed, following accepted industry methods and guidelines.
- Leave work areas neat, clean, and fully tidied once the task is complete.
- Check plant and equipment against council standards before the day’s work begins, including guards, switches, and safety devices, and report any repair needs to the Team Leader.
- Report vandalism, damage, or hazards at each site to the Team Leader.
- Carry out scheduled mowing, maintenance, and improvement works across parks and reserves while representing council professionally.
- Work safely as part of a team and contribute to training, supervision, and service improvement activities.
- Set up traffic control where required, maintain accurate records, support work scheduling, communicate with stakeholders, and safely handle vehicles, equipment, and safety resources.
Skills and experience
- Hands-on knowledge of operating and maintaining tractors, front deck mowers, trucks, and related plant and machinery safely.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively to meet team targets.
- Experience improving and maintaining parks, reserves, and horticultural assets.
- Clear and effective communication with colleagues and stakeholders.
- Ability to spot opportunities to improve council assets and service delivery.
- Strong planning, organisation, and workload monitoring skills.
- Experience preparing equipment for specific tasks.
- Confidence using initiative and working with limited supervision.
- Flexible and adaptable approach to shifting priorities and work demands.
Licences and qualifications
- A current driver’s licence is required.
- A Medium Rigid truck licence is preferred but not mandatory.
- A Certificate III or higher in Turf Management, Horticulture, or a related field is preferred but not essential.
- Practical experience and knowledge of safe tractor, mower, and truck operation is an advantage, though not compulsory.
