About the opportunity
Christchurch City Council is expanding its Residential Building Inspections team and is seeking qualified, experienced inspectors who want to help improve life in Ōtautahi. About the role
This position is more than a compliance check. You will act as a trusted specialist, guide discussions, share technical knowledge, and help build a safer and stronger city.
What you'll do
- Prepare clear, accurate, and professional site inspection reports.
- Check that building work matches the approved consent documents.
- Offer expert guidance and assist in resolving building-related issues.
- Handle customer questions and work toward constructive outcomes.
- Keep up to date with the Building Act, related regulations, and code requirements.
What we're looking for
- A Regulation 18 qualification, either already completed or currently underway.
- At least 2 years of building consent authority inspection experience.
- At least 3 years of New Zealand building industry experience.
- Competency at National BCA Residential 1 level or higher.
- Sound judgement, technical assurance, and strong written reporting ability.

Working arrangements
This is a permanent full-time position based primarily at Te Hononga, Christchurch City Council Civic Offices, 53 Hereford Street, Christchurch. The role requires 37.5 to 40 hours of work per week.
Salary
The pay band depends on the inspector competency level. Progression is based on assessment, so inspectors may move through levels at different speeds. Starting pay will also reflect the successful candidate’s knowledge, skills, experience, and internal pay relativity within the organisation.
- Level 1: $74,394 to $82,660
- Level 2: $81,227 to $90,252
- Level 3: $96,465 to $107,183
