Role Overview
The Research Officer supports grant-related work, research coordination, and knowledge-sharing activities across the research environment. This role works with researchers and the research management team to strengthen research operations, support funding applications, and help ensure approved projects are launched, tracked, and completed effectively.
The position requires someone who is self-directed, adaptable, and comfortable working in a collaborative, team-based setting where priorities may shift and deadlines must be met.
Key Accountabilities
The role covers a broad range of research support responsibilities, including identifying external funding opportunities, preparing budgets, reviewing contracts, monitoring progress, and producing reports. It also involves coordinating research projects, conducting literature reviews, analyzing research programs, and preparing materials for sharing findings with different audiences.
The successful candidate will assist with the development of research operations plans, external grant submissions, and CancerCare Manitoba Foundation grant applications for both operating and infrastructure needs. They will also support the Manager, Research Development and Industry Relations in monitoring research development and fostering collaboration across the research enterprise.
Once a project is approved and funded, the Research Officer helps position it for launch, tracks its progress when required, and supports timely close-out according to specifications.

Qualifications
Education: A post-secondary degree in a health or science-related field from an accredited institution is required. A master’s degree is preferred.
Experience: Candidates should have 5 years of experience in a research, medical laboratory, or similar research setting; 5 years of experience working in a team environment with a strong record of collaboration with colleagues and stakeholders, ideally in a research, laboratory, or clinical setting; and 2 years of experience in clinical trials projects or units. A comparable combination of education and experience may also be considered.
Skills and abilities: The role calls for strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, research and numerical capability, and curiosity about policy processes and research contracts. Applicants should be able to work independently as well as across multiple teams, understand legal and regulatory research documents, communicate clearly in writing and speaking, prepare reports and presentations, manage projects, handle risk, solve problems, and develop sound recommendations for senior leaders.
Assets: A doctorate in a health or science-related discipline and experience creating and managing research projects in a healthcare facility are considered advantages.
Working conditions: The job is based in a computerized office setting with frequent meetings. The incumbent must be able to lift and carry items and manage occasional interruptions while also setting aside focused time for planning and concentration.
Other requirements: A satisfactory employment record is required. The applicant must be legally authorized to work in Canada. French language ability is an asset.
