Job description

About the Role

The Institute of Catastrophe Risk Management (ICRM), established in January 2010, is a multidisciplinary research institute focused on catastrophe risk in Asia. Its work supports regional and international understanding of natural hazards such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, typhoons, floods, and droughts.

The institute is hiring a Research Fellow in Earthquake Engineering to contribute to its research on natural catastrophe exposure and risk, especially earthquake-related damage and losses affecting building stock. This position centres on earthquake ground-motion modelling and the structural response of buildings under seismic loading.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop models for how earthquake waves travel from the seismic source to the site.
  • Carry out probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA).
  • Run structural calculations to estimate earthquake damage and loss from seismic ground motions.
  • Evaluate how often such loss events may occur using probabilistic seismic risk assessment methods.

Requirements

  • A PhD in Civil Engineering, Earthquake Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Working knowledge of earthquake datasets, modelling approaches, and software used for seismic hazard and loss analysis.
  • Proficiency in programming tools such as Matlab, R, or Python, ideally within a GIS-based workflow.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present work to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to contribute to related research areas, including urban lifelines and cascading failures.
  • Self-driven, proactive, and results-focused, with the capability to work independently and handle uncertainty in data.

Additional Information

Only candidates shortlisted for further consideration will be contacted.
