Research Associate I - NIH Funded Clinical Trial (Psychological Science)

Position Overview

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's Department of Psychological Science is seeking a Research Associate I to join the Behavioral Health Lab. Reporting primarily to Dr. Laura Seligman and Dr. Joseph Hovey, this role supports an NIH-funded clinical trial investigating behavioral interventions for dental phobia in children and adolescents aged 7 to 16.

Research Trial Details

This clinical study compares the effectiveness of two behavioral treatments for dental phobia: One Session Treatment for Dental Phobia in Children (OSTD) versus Psychoeducation and Progressive Muscle Relaxation Treatment (RELAX). Participants are randomized to one of these single treatment arms.

Key Responsibilities

• Recruit and screen eligible study participants.
• Coordinate and schedule participant visits in accordance with the study protocol.
• Administer research assessments accurately and consistently.
• Support interventionists during treatment sessions.
• Manage research data collection and ensure accurate monitoring in databases.
• Process and document study participant payments.
• Organize and maintain research equipment and supplies inventory.
• Contribute to preparation of research reports and findings.
• Adhere strictly to all applicable university and state policies.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Supervision

This position works under direct supervision with occasional guidance to student assistants involved in the research.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required.
• Master’s degree in Psychology or a related discipline is preferred.
• Previous experience is not mandatory; however, bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is advantageous.
• Experience conducting diagnostic interviews and engaging in behavioral or clinical research with human subjects is highly valued.

Technical Requirements and Working Conditions

Proficiency with Microsoft Office and capability to learn institutional software systems is necessary. The role involves working in an office and research environment with possible attendance across multiple locations in the Rio Grande Valley. Flexibility to work evenings or weekends depending on the schedule is expected.
