Job description
About the Position
This role is based within the Hydrogeology group at the Institute of Geological Sciences led by Prof. Dr. Nadine Goeppert at Freie Universität Berlin. The research focuses on understanding groundwater quality, pollutant fate, microbial ecology, and quantitative hydrogeology, particularly in karst aquifer systems.
Job Function
As part of the DFG-funded RISE project focused on sustainable karst water management, the successful candidate will research methodologies for early-warning systems detecting groundwater contamination. The emphasis is on studying transport processes impacting the spatial and temporal variation of fecal bacteria and microbial contamination proxies. This involves utilizing in-situ flow cytometry to quickly analyze total and intact cell counts, differentiating viable from dead cells and classifying cells by nucleic acid content levels. Additional proxies include specific hydrochemical parameters and particle size distributions.
Additional Details
This externally funded role offers an opportunity to pursue doctoral studies. The position is allocated at a 75% workload, limited to a term of three years, and classified under salary grade 13 according to TV-L FU standards.
Eligibility and Application
The position requires a completed master's degree in hydrogeology or related disciplines such as geoecology, engineering biology, environmental sciences, or water sciences. Candidates should possess a strong foundation in hydrogeology, experience with geological fieldwork, hydrochemical and microbiological analyses, and the capability to work independently as well as collaboratively. Proficiency in English (B2/C1 level) and a valid driver's license with an acceptable record are also expected. The role may involve hydrogeological fieldwork in international locations.
