About the Position
The Collaborative Research Center (SFB 1759) titled "Habitability as a fundamental planetary process: Towards a paradigm shift away from our perception of the uniqueness of Earth" is a newly founded initiative studying planetary habitability through fundamental physio-geo-chemical processes influenced by planetary evolution. This research emphasizes planetary boundary conditions determined by astronomy, physics, chemistry, and geology, rather than Earth-specific biological developments. The center focuses on identifying signatures, such as atmospheric trace elements, that distinguish abiotic processes from those hinting at extraterrestrial life, aiming to build a database of potential biosignatures and habitability markers.
The research also adopts a multidisciplinary approach, evaluating ethical concerns, science communication, social media discussions, and public perceptions related to the search for life beyond Earth.
Role and Duties
The role is situated at the Institute of Geological Sciences, Freie Universität Berlin. The earliest start date is 1 October 2026, with funding secured until 30 June 2030.
The researcher will focus on studying the interior evolution and physico-chemical attributes of parent bodies of water-rich carbonaceous chondrites and their importance for solar system habitability. Responsibilities include assisting with sample acquisition, preparing samples, conducting major and trace element bulk chemical analyses, and performing SEM, EPMA, and Micro-Raman analyses on polished thin sections. Additional tasks involve oxygen isotope analyses in minerals and Mn-Cr dating of carbonates using SIMS.
Applicant Requirements
- Completed MSc degree in Geological Sciences or a related discipline.
- Laboratory hands-on experience in geochemistry and petrology is preferred.
- Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and communication capabilities.
- Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English at B2/C1 level.
