Job Overview

As a Daily News Reporter based at the Toronto Broadcast Centre, you will deliver compelling local stories that matter to the community. Your work will involve covering breaking news and a broad variety of issues, crafting original content for digital, radio, video, and social media platforms. Emphasis is placed on producing fair, balanced, and inclusive journalism that reflects diverse voices, especially those traditionally underrepresented.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop and pitch original story ideas that engage audiences and reflect community interests across all CBC platforms.
  • Respond promptly to breaking news events as they happen.
  • Consistently provide exclusive and unique content.
  • Analyze and condense complex information quickly under tight deadlines.
  • Build and maintain extensive networks of sources and community connections and engage with community initiatives.
  • Collaborate closely with CBC colleagues to develop stories, features, and initiate ongoing coverage.

Essential Qualifications and Skills

  • Proven experience in a fast-paced daily news environment.
  • Strong ability to generate, pitch, and pursue impactful original stories that resonate with audiences.
  • Excellent writing proficiency across multiple platforms, including digital content, with experience in gathering, editing, and packaging news for digital, video, and audio mediums.
  • Comfort and skill presenting live broadcasts from studio and field locations.
  • Familiarity with emerging storytelling formats and openness to evolving responsibilities across diverse CBC media channels.
  • Commitment to serving audience needs and passion for local news coverage.
  • Established connection to Toronto’s diverse communities with an understanding of a wide range of perspectives and experiences.
  • Strong work ethic, effective communication skills, and a positive, collaborative approach.
  • Knowledge of additional languages is advantageous.
  • Dedication to promoting diversity, inclusion, and respect in the workplace.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record per CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance requirements.
  • A university degree in journalism or related field with at least three years of relevant recent experience.
  • Willingness and flexibility to work varied hours as needed.
