European Business Reporter (m/f/d), Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN)

Role Overview

ACS International Ltd., a subsidiary of the American Chemical Society (ACS), is looking for a European Business Reporter to join the editorial team of Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN), an independent, award-winning publication covering global chemistry and related sciences. Based in either the United Kingdom or Germany, this role involves delivering insightful and engaging journalism on European chemical industry developments, including corporate moves, innovations, policies, and market dynamics.

Key Responsibilities

• Identify and report breaking stories and emerging trends influencing European and international chemical enterprises like mergers, technology breakthroughs, market shifts, regulatory changes, intellectual property, and startups.
• Create original, distinctive story ideas that set C&EN’s coverage apart and add notable value to readers.
• Focus coverage on significant happenings in Europe’s chemical sector encompassing business, innovation, sustainability, policy, and new technology.
• Contribute across multiple media platforms, including articles, newsletters, podcasts, videos, webinars, and social media channels.
• Maintain high journalistic standards emphasizing ethical reporting, accuracy, and fairness.
• Produce in-depth, polished stories consistent with C&EN’s style guidelines and publication schedules.
• Collaborate with editorial, design, multimedia, and audience engagement teams to enhance the impact of journalistic content.
• Build and sustain networks across industry, academic circles, governmental bodies, and investors.
• Attend and report on key European industry conferences and events.
• Proactively pitch newsworthy and enterprise story concepts to the editorial team.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in science, journalism, communications, or a related discipline; a background in chemistry or related scientific fields is highly valued.
• At least three years of professional experience as a business, science, technology, or industry journalist.
• Experience reporting on business, science, technology, industry, or policy subjects.
• Preferred prior exposure to the European chemical, manufacturing, sustainability, energy, or cleantech sectors.
• Multimedia journalism experience is advantageous.
• Prior work within the chemical sector or scientific publishing is a plus.

• Capability to analyze and integrate information from various sources and present it clearly to a scientifically literate audience.
• Demonstrated success in producing engaging, complex topic stories for sophisticated readers.
• Initiative in pitching and independently developing news and enterprise content.
• Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Positive, collaborative attitude with dedication to teamwork.
• Fluent English required; knowledge of additional European languages is beneficial.

Compensation and Benefits

Competitive salary based on experience and location: approximately £55,000-60,000 for UK roles and €76,000-80,000 for Germany-based positions. Benefits vary according to country-specific employment policies.
