Job description

Role overview

This opportunity is being shared on behalf of a partner employer, which will handle applications and every subsequent step in the process. The hiring company is seeking a Regional Finance Director based in Australia.

This is a senior finance leadership position focused on enhancing financial planning, governance, and operational performance across a complex international portfolio. The role blends strategic oversight with practical support for multi-country operations, donor-funded initiatives, and other priority programs.

You will work closely with senior leaders, finance specialists, and operational teams to improve decisions through reliable financial analysis and clear reporting. The position also offers the chance to shape large-scale programs, strengthen finance systems, and contribute to impactful work across multiple regions.

In this role, you will help build resilient finance functions, grow team capability, and drive ongoing improvement in a fast-moving environment.

Accountabilities

  • Set the direction for regional financial management and make sure it stays aligned with organizational policies, procedures, and donor expectations.
  • Work with finance leaders and regional partners to improve financial practices, increase operational efficiency, and support program delivery.
  • Track regional financial results, spot risks and opportunities, and put mitigation actions in place to strengthen financial performance.
  • Oversee regional accounting activities, including internal controls, accurate reporting, prompt reconciliations, and compliance with finance standards.
  • Support country teams with budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, and analysis to improve resource use and program outcomes.
  • Review financial statements, audits, and compliance observations, and help drive corrective actions and continuous improvement.
  • Guide teams on donor rules, finance policies, and compliance obligations, especially in complex international funding settings.
  • Contribute to proposal preparation, budget reviews, cost analysis, and the financial side of business development work.
  • Partner with senior leadership by providing financial insight, risk assessment, and recommendations that support strategic choices.
  • Recruit, coach, mentor, and develop regional finance team members to build capability and performance.
  • Encourage knowledge sharing, training, and capacity-building across finance and operational stakeholders.
  • Help roll out new finance processes, systems, and strategic initiatives across the region.
  • Travel from time to time to country offices and field locations to provide oversight, support, and capability development.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline is required; a master’s degree, CPA, or similar professional certification is an added advantage.
  • At least 10 years of progressive international finance management experience, ideally gained in international development, humanitarian, or nonprofit settings.
  • Experience managing finance operations across multiple countries, compliance frameworks, and donor-funded programs.
  • Strong command of internal controls, accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and risk management.
  • Background working with major donor rules, including US Government and European Union funding requirements.
  • Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop finance teams across different locations and cultures.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills, with the confidence to influence senior decision-makers.
  • Comfort working in complex, fast-paced, and changing environments, including emergency or field-based contexts.
  • Ability to interpret complex financial information and explain it clearly to non-finance audiences.
  • Excellent organization and prioritization skills, with the ability to handle several tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Fluency in English and Arabic is mandatory; additional regional language ability is highly preferred.
  • Good proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Willingness and ability to travel regularly, up to 25% of the time.

Benefits

  • Fully remote arrangement with flexibility to work from locations that align with regional time zones.
  • The chance to lead financial strategy and operations across a broad international portfolio.
  • A meaningful role contributing to programs and initiatives with global reach and impact.
  • Ongoing professional growth through learning and capacity-building opportunities.
  • A collaborative setting involving international finance, operations, and leadership teams.
  • Opportunity to coach and develop finance professionals across multiple regions.
  • Exposure to complex systems, global partnerships, and large-scale operational challenges.
  • A supportive culture that values inclusion, teamwork, accountability, and professional development.
  • Travel opportunities that support regional programs and strengthen field operations.
