Role overview
Deutsche Bahn is looking for a career changer to start as a signal box operator (Weichenwärter:in) with DB InfraGO AG. The position is available from 01.12.2026 and is linked to several possible work locations in the Eilenburg, Falkenberg/Elster, Leipzig, Lutherstadt Wittenberg and Torgau area. The role is based on-site.
Training phase
Before taking on the operational duties, you will complete a retraining programme. The classroom part takes place in one of the company’s regional training centres, while practical assignments are arranged as close to your home location as possible. The retraining is full-time and runs for 39 hours per week, combining theory and hands-on learning. Training groups consist of 12 participants.
Day-to-day responsibilities
After completing the retraining, you will carry out operational railway tasks under the direction of the train dispatcher.
- Control train movements on small and medium-sized signal boxes using levers, push buttons and rotary switches.
- Carry out route checks, track-clear verification, clearance checks and train observation, and document operational actions in line with the applicable rules.
- Coordinate closely with signal box colleagues, train dispatchers and control centres.
- Monitor and supervise railway lines, regulate track usage and close tracks when disruptions occur.
Profile and requirements
You should have at least a qualified secondary school leaving certificate equivalent to a German Hauptschulabschluss. The employer is looking for people who stay calm and keep a clear overview even in demanding situations. A personal car and willingness to travel within the local area are required. Flexibility and readiness to work shifts, including nights, weekends and public holidays, are also expected.
