Overview
The QAQC Engineer will be responsible for designing, implementing, and sustaining quality assurance and control mechanisms within all carpentry, joinery, and fit-out manufacturing processes. The professional ensures strict adherence to approved drawing specifications, client mandates, industry standards, and organizational quality protocols throughout all production stages.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain Quality Management Systems aligned with ISO 9001:2015 or equivalent standards.
- Create and update Quality Plans, Method Statements, and Inspection & Test Plans specifically tailored for joinery and fit-out assignments.
- Oversee comprehensive QA coverage across procurement, fabrication, finishing, packaging, and dispatch phases.
- Manage internal quality audits and assist during external evaluations by clients, consultants, and certification bodies.
- Review project documentation such as specifications, drawings, and BOQs to discern quality expectations and associated risks.
- Define quality targets and monitor them using KPIs and detailed quality reports.
- Promote a quality-centric culture among production and project teams.
- Carry out inspection of incoming materials including timber, veneers, laminates, hardware, and adhesives to verify alignment with approved submittals and technical documentation.
- Perform in-process checks during various manufacturing stages like cutting, machining, assembly, veneering, laminating, and finishing, including pre-installation mock-ups.
- Inspect completed products ensuring they conform with shop drawings, approved samples, tolerance limits, and finish quality.
- Evaluate workmanship quality both at factory and on-site installations of joinery and fit-out items.
- Ensure proper maintenance and calibration of all measuring and inspection equipment.
- Identify and document non-conformities issuing Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) as necessary, followed by diligent tracking of corrective and preventive actions ensuring their effectiveness.
- Collaborate closely with Project Managers, Production Heads, Factory Supervisors, and Site Engineers regarding quality matters.
- Coordinate with consultants, clients, and independent inspectors during inspections.
- Support Factory Acceptance Tests and on-site quality checks prior to deliveries and installations.
- Monitor quality compliance during site installation, rectification, and snag clearance activities.
- Assist in preparing handover packages, warranty documentation, and quality dossiers when needed.
- Maintain comprehensive and accurate documentation of inspections, test outcomes, approvals, NCRs, and corrective action follow-ups.
- Generate Inspection Requests and secure timely approvals.
- Compile and present quality dashboards and periodic summary reports for management review.
- Manage quality documentation ensuring usage of only approved document versions and maintain traceability records for materials and workmanship.
- Assure compliance to relevant standards including ISO 9001, ASTM, BS, EN, and local regulations.
- Verify that products meet necessary fire rating, environmental, sustainability, and safety requirements.
- Monitor health, safety, and environmental aspects related to materials such as volatile organic compounds (VOC) and fire retardant treatments.
- Analyze recurring defects to determine root causes and suggest process, material, or inspection improvements.
- Support quality training initiatives for production and site teams focusing on workmanship standards and best practices.
- Participate constructively in lessons learned reviews following project completion.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Civil Engineering, Wood Technology, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Seven to ten years of proven experience in QAQC roles within carpentry, joinery, or fit-out manufacturing contexts.
- Demonstrable expertise in factory and site quality control for custom joinery and interior fit-out projects.
Skills and Competencies
- In-depth knowledge of carpentry materials, finishes, and fabrication techniques.
- Competency in interpreting shop drawings, technical details, and BOQs.
- Familiarity with ISO 9001 standards and quality auditing methodologies.
- Strong detail orientation complemented by analytical capabilities.
- Excellent skills in documentation and report generation.
- Effective communication and coordination abilities across diverse teams.
- Proficient in the use of MS Office and basic quality management applications.
Working Conditions
- Primary work location is within a manufacturing plant with periodic visits to construction sites.
- May require additional working hours to meet project timelines.
- Exposure to woodworking machinery, factory, and construction site environments is expected.
