Job description

About the company

Hitachi Rail is a global mobility technology company focused on safer, more efficient, and more sustainable rail transport. Its teams work across the full rail ecosystem, from rolling stock and maintenance to control and safety systems, digital control, and smart ticketing. The organization operates worldwide and employs 24,000 people across more than 50 countries.

Role overview

As a Product Designer (UX/UI) in the Digital Competence Center, you will craft user-focused digital experiences for complex industrial and rail-related environments. Your work will connect user needs and real operational workflows with intuitive, high-quality interface solutions. You will contribute to digital transformation efforts and help strengthen human-centered thinking across the organization.

Location: Berlin, Land Berlin, Germany. The role is based onsite with a hybrid working model.

Key responsibilities

  • Run user research activities, including interviews, field observations, and workflow analysis.
  • Turn research findings into user journeys, personas, and service blueprints that support design decisions.
  • Create wireframes, user flows, and prototypes to develop practical digital solutions.
  • Design polished user interfaces that support usability, consistency, and visual clarity.
  • Help evolve the design system by contributing components, styles, and interaction patterns.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to simplify complex technical and operational needs into clear experiences.
  • Lead workshops and co-creation sessions while promoting user-centered design across initiatives.
  • Test usability and refine solutions using feedback and data-driven insights.

Candidate profile

You should have a degree in UX Design, HCI, Interaction Design, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience. Several years of experience in digital product design are preferred, ideally in complex technical or industrial settings. A strong portfolio showing your UX approach, problem-solving ability, and execution quality is important. You will also need proficiency with modern design and prototyping tools such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, or Axure, along with solid knowledge of UX methods, interaction design, accessibility, and information architecture. Strong communication skills, a user-first mindset, and the ability to work well with diverse stakeholders are essential.

Benefits and conditions

  • Opportunity to work in international teams and benefit from internal networking.
  • Contribute to digitalization efforts shaping the rail industry in Germany and globally.
  • Flexible working arrangements, including flexitime and hybrid work.
  • Secure permanent employment with a global company.

Equal opportunity note

Hitachi Rail promotes inclusion, equal opportunity, and respectful collaboration. Applications from severely disabled candidates and those with equivalent status may receive preference when qualifications are comparable. The company supports diversity across social and ethnic background, gender, religion, ideology, age, and sexual identity or orientation.
