Job description

About Fizz

Fizz stands as the largest college-focused social application in the United States, fostering connections among Gen Z through shared experiences and identities. It offers private, moderated communities limited to verified students at colleges, delivering an authentic feed unmatched by platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Their latest initiative, Global Fizz, broadens this connection nationwide to encompass all of Gen Z.

Since its launch at Stanford in July 2021, the app has attracted over 95% of undergraduates, with half engaging daily. Following a $25 million Series B funding round in July 2023, Fizz has solidified its position in 700+ college communities and expanded beyond college markets, now generating revenue through advertising.

Looking ahead to 2026, the company aims to cover the entire US college market, grow revenue through innovative advertising, and enhance its product to become the preeminent social platform for all Gen Z users, not limited to college students.

Role Overview

Fizz is seeking a Product Designer accountable for comprehensive design ownership across all features, platforms, and markets. This role demands a balance between aesthetic appeal and functional excellence, targeting a youthful and culturally relevant user base. Reporting to the Head of Product and collaborating closely with engineering, this position holds considerable creative responsibility for delivering thoughtful and delightful experiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end product design for the entire Fizz app across US and global markets, from concept through engineering handoff.
  • Interpret Product Requirement Documents (PRDs) by exploring multiple design solutions, discussing trade-offs, and collaborating with Product Management to finalize optimal choices.
  • Design all aspects of features, including primary flows, interactions, transitions, empty/error/loading states, and edge cases.
  • Identify and address dependencies and impacts on other product areas proactively to prevent engineering challenges.
  • Communicate designs clearly to engineering and leadership teams, providing context that facilitates understanding of trade-offs.
  • Accept constructive criticism without defensiveness, rapidly distill feedback, and iterate effectively to support informed decision-making.
  • Develop and maintain a scalable design system that supports diverse features and internationalization, including right-to-left (RTL) language support.
  • Stay deeply engaged with Gen Z cultural trends across regions and infuse this insight into every design decision.
  • Create high-fidelity prototypes that leave no ambiguity for engineers, employing AI tools to simulate realistic interactions where applicable.
  • Integrate AI across the design workflow, from generating mockups and prototypes to testing concepts in near-production environments.
  • Utilize user research, data, and feedback loops to continually refine design iterations.

Candidate Profile

  • A portfolio showcasing refined taste for consumer mobile products that resonate authentically with young users.
  • Proven experience designing for Gen Z, with keen awareness of their cultural preferences and trends.
  • Background in consumer social platforms, particularly with feeds, reactions, sharing, notifications, or similar social features at scale.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, committed to pixel-perfect outcomes.
  • Structured approach to design that explores multiple directions based on briefs and clearly articulates decision trade-offs.
  • Comprehensive design skills covering every feature aspect, including non-primary states and flows.
  • Humble, collaborative mindset, focusing on the best outcome over personal attachment to solutions, and enhancing team decision-making.
  • Strong presentation skills able to convey designs and trade-offs to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Comfort working as the sole designer with high autonomy.
  • Proficiency in Figma and familiarity with next-generation AI design and prototyping tools.
  • Deep knowledge of mobile product design conventions, system behavior, platform guidelines, and native code translation considerations.

Additional Advantages

  • Experience working with international and culturally diverse user bases, including support for right-to-left languages.
  • Skills in motion design or advanced prototyping that express interaction intent beyond static visuals.
  • Knowledge of native mobile development.
  • Demonstrated success in launching consumer products embraced by users under 22.

Non-ideal Fits

  • Portfolio primarily in enterprise, B2B, or utility areas rather than consumer products.
  • Dependence on large design teams or extensive processes to perform effectively.
  • Tendency to consider design complete upon wireframe delivery without thorough follow-through.
  • Lack of active curiosity about youth culture and Gen Z trends.

Work Environment

This role reports to the Head of Product and is embedded directly within the engineering team. As the only product designer, the candidate will enjoy broad creative ownership and the opportunity to see their work realized in each shipped feature. Balancing exploratory design with swift execution and iteration is essential in this fast-paced environment.
