Job description
Position Overview
This role is for a probationary special education teacher at Maple West Elementary in Williamsville, New York. The teacher will work with students who need specialized support across K-12 special education settings, with particular attention to learners who experience substantial academic delays, behavior regulation challenges, frustration tolerance issues, difficulty following multi-step instructions, and emotional regulation needs.
What the Role Involves
- Plan, deliver, and assess instruction aligned to curriculum goals.
- Adapt teaching materials, supplies, and lessons to support learner growth.
- Manage classrooms effectively and keep students engaged in learning.
- Use assessment results and other data to identify needs and track progress.
- Support students with a wide range of abilities through differentiated instruction.
- Communicate clearly with students, families, teachers, administrators, and support personnel.
- Work collaboratively with paraprofessionals, aides, support staff, and case managers to support post-secondary outcomes.
Qualifications
- Prior experience in special education for grades K-12 is required.
- Strong understanding of students with significant learning delays and behavioral or emotional regulation needs is expected.
- Knowledge of curriculum planning, development, implementation, and evaluation is necessary.
- Ability to maintain an orderly, productive classroom environment is important.
- Capacity to modify instruction and materials for students at different ability levels is required.
- Willingness to reflect on teaching practice and use feedback for professional growth is expected.
- Ability to use data and assessment tools to guide instruction and measure progress is required.
- A positive, compassionate, patient, and supportive approach to students is essential.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills are needed for working with school teams and families.
Preferred Experience
- Prior success supporting students with a wide range of learning needs and challenges is preferred.
- Experience teaching students with disabilities through modified curriculum aimed at graduation outcomes is preferred.
- Background in collaborating with paraprofessionals, aides, and other support staff is preferred.
Reporting Relationship
This position reports to the Assistant Superintendent for Exceptional Education & Student Services.
Compensation
The annual salary range is $44,840 to $53,700 under the WTA contract.
