About the Role
We are seeking a Prisoner Custody Officer (PCO) to join our Prisoner Escort Custody Services team at Exeter Law Court (EX1 1UG). In this critical role, you will help maintain a secure and safe justice environment by managing detainees throughout court proceedings. You will be part of a team dedicated to supporting the justice system with job security, professional development, and competitive salary progression.
Position Details
- Starting salary of £24,596 (35 hours per week), increasing to £25,555 from 1st September 2026.
- Opportunity for annual salary increases across subsequent years (Year 2: £26,191; Year 3: £26,684; Year 4: £27,180).
- Role operates 24 hours a day, 6 days a week, with early and late shifts on a rota set 12 weeks in advance.
- Flexibility in working hours is essential, with part-time options available only across full working days.
Key Responsibilities
- Escort detainees within the court settings including courtrooms and holding cells.
- Supervise detainees during court hearings to maintain safety and security.
- Manage sensitive situations while upholding strict confidentiality.
- Promote detainees’ welfare by facilitating access to food, drink, and wellbeing checks.
- Monitor detainee behaviour and respond proactively to incidents or risks.
- Conduct thorough searches to ensure a secure environment.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records and documentation.
- Collaborate closely with court staff and partner agencies to ensure seamless operations.
Candidate Requirements
- Applicants can come from diverse backgrounds; commitment and dedication to making a positive impact is essential.
- Completion of a paid 5½-week training program will be provided.
- Desirable: Full UK driving licence (categories B/B1).
- Physical fitness appropriate to job demands.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to maintain composure and make sound decisions under pressure.
- Competence in managing behaviour and de-escalating conflicts.
- Team-oriented with aptitude for following procedures precisely.
