Job description
About the Role
Join His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service as an Operational Support Grade (OSG) at HMP Isle of Wight with an annual salary of £29,432. In this dynamic and varied position, you will contribute to the smooth daily operations of a busy prison facility. Your duties will range from conducting security checks and searches at the entrance, overseeing deliveries, supervising visitors, to monitoring communications and CCTV surveillance within the prison premises. The role combines administrative tasks with physical activities such as lifting, carrying, and escorting vehicles across the prison grounds.
Driving is a key component of this position, so holding a valid UK driving licence is mandatory.
Candidate Profile
No formal qualifications are necessary to apply, but strong communication skills and the ability to maintain composure under pressure are essential. With good judgment, common sense, and teamwork spirit, this role offers a unique opportunity to begin a rewarding career in the corrections environment.
Shift work is required, including weekends and nights, to ensure continuous prison operation.
Career Impact
This role allows you to contribute to public safety and the rehabilitation process while gaining valuable insight into prison operations. Unlike prison officers, your interaction with inmates will be limited but may occur occasionally depending on the prison’s needs. The experience gained can open pathways to progress within the prison service, including applying for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion program.
Benefits and Development
- 25 days of annual leave upon joining, increasing to 30 days after ten years of service, prorated accordingly
- 9 additional bank, public, and privilege holidays
- Eligibility for a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
- Access to the Civil Service pension scheme
- Additional benefits such as season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and participation in a Cycle to Work scheme
