Job description
Role Overview
Join His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service as an Operational Support Grade (OSG) at HMP Grendon or Spring Hill. This vital position involves assisting with the daily functions of a busy prison by performing a variety of duties to maintain smooth and safe operations.
Key Responsibilities
The role includes duties such as security checks and searching at entry points, managing incoming deliveries, supervising visitors, as well as monitoring phone calls and closed-circuit television systems. The job requires a mix of administrative tasks and physical activities, including lifting, carrying, and escorting vehicles within the prison grounds.
Candidate Profile
While no formal qualifications are needed, the ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, remain calm under pressure, demonstrate sound judgment and common sense, and work effectively within a team. A full and valid UK driving licence is mandatory as driving duties are integral to the role. Shift work covering nights and weekends will be required.
Benefits and Career Development
This unique position offers the chance to contribute to public safety and support rehabilitation efforts. Although prisoner contact is limited compared to prison officers, occasional interaction may occur depending on the site. The job provides valuable insight into prison operations and can be a stepping stone toward roles such as Prison Officer, with access to conversion schemes.
Employees will receive comprehensive training, access to development opportunities, and various benefits including 25 days annual leave (increasing to 30 days after 10 years), 9 bank and public holidays, eligibility for a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, a generous Civil Service pension, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and participation in the Cycle to Work scheme.
