Job description
Overview
Join His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) at HMP Bullingdon in Oakley, England as a Prison Support Officer. This role offers an opportunity to actively contribute to the smooth operation of a busy prison environment through a blend of administrative and physical tasks.
Role Responsibilities
As an Operational Support Grade (OSG), your duties will span various activities including conducting security checks and searches at the prison entrance, overseeing deliveries, supervising visitors, and monitoring phone communications and CCTV footage. The position combines desk-based tasks with physically engaging duties such as lifting, carrying, and escorting vehicles within the prison grounds.
Working Environment and Schedule
The role requires adherence to fixed shifts, including nights and weekends, ensuring the maintenance of daily prison operations. Due to the prison’s rural location, holding a full, valid UK driving licence with D1 category endorsement is beneficial and necessary for driving specific vehicles. Candidates should consider their transport arrangements carefully, as public transport options may be limited.
Candidate Profile
No formal qualifications are mandatory; however, excellent communication skills, the ability to remain composed under pressure, sound judgment, and teamwork are essential qualities. Limited contact with prisoners may occur depending on the facility.
Career Growth and Benefits
This position provides valuable insight into prison operations and can serve as a stepping stone to other roles within the correctional system, including potential advancement to Prison Officer through the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.
Compensation and Perks
- Starting salary of £29,432 per year
- 25 days of annual leave initially, increasing to 30 days after 10 years’ service (pro-rata)
- 9 additional bank, public and privilege holidays
- Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
- Membership of the Civil Service pension scheme
- Season ticket loans, retail discounts, Employee Assistance Programme, and Cycle to Work scheme
Additional Information
Your punctuality for shift start and finish times is your responsibility. Driving licence requirements include entitlement to drive vehicles with no more than 16 passenger seats, a length up to 8 meters, and trailers up to 750 kg.
