Job description
Role overview
This position is for an Operational Support Grade at HMP Long Lartin, where you will help keep daily prison operations organised, safe, and efficient. The role combines desk-based duties with active, hands-on work across the prison grounds.
What you’ll do
You will support the smooth running of the establishment by handling a wide mix of operational tasks. These may include security and gate searches, managing deliveries, overseeing visitors, and keeping an eye on phone activity and CCTV. The job also involves physical activity such as lifting, carrying, and walking to escort vehicles.
Working pattern and travel
This is a shift-based role that includes weekends and night shifts. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to travel to work reliably and arrive on time. Some prison sites are in rural areas with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and your own transport can help, although it is not required unless specifically stated for the vacancy.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are needed. The employer is looking for someone who communicates well, stays composed in pressured situations, shows sound judgement, uses common sense, and works well as part of a team.
Career development
This role can build valuable knowledge of how a prison operates and may open the door to other prison service roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.
Training and benefits
You will receive training and development support, along with a package of Civil Service-style benefits and progression opportunities.
Additional information
The pay for this position is £29,432. As an Operational Support Grade, your contact with prisoners is limited, though occasional interaction may happen depending on the prison. The role offers a chance to contribute to public protection by supporting the work carried out in prisons every day.
Leave and other benefits
- 25 days of annual leave on joining, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata where applicable
- 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays
- Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
- Access to the Civil Service pension scheme
- Season ticket loan support
- Retail discounts
- Employee Assistance Programme
- Cycle to Work scheme
