Job description
Role overview
HMP Long Lartin is hiring an Operational Support Grade to help keep the prison operating safely and efficiently. This role sits within a collaborative team and covers a mix of security, visitor management, deliveries, gate procedures, phone monitoring, CCTV observation, and other everyday support tasks.
What the work involves
The position combines office-based duties with practical work such as lifting, carrying, and walking across the prison grounds to escort vehicles. It is an active, fast-moving role that supports the secure day-to-day running of the establishment.
Travel and shift expectations
Some prison sites are in rural areas with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and access to your own vehicle can be helpful, though it is not mandatory unless specifically stated. Shift start and end times are fixed, so you must be able to travel to work punctually. The role includes a mix of shifts, including nights and weekends.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are needed. The role is well suited to someone who communicates clearly, stays composed under pressure, uses sound judgement, shows common sense, and works well as part of a team.
Career growth
This job offers a chance to build insight into how a prison functions and can open doors to other prison-based roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.
Training and development
Successful candidates will receive training along with opportunities to develop and progress within the service.
Pay and additional benefits
The salary for this position is £29,432.
- 25 days of annual leave on joining, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata
- 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays
- Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
- Eligibility for the Civil Service pension scheme
- Season ticket loans
- Retail discounts
