Job description

Role overview

This position is an Operational Support Grade (OSG) post at HMP Huntercombe. It is a hands-on support role that helps keep a prison operating safely and efficiently each day. The work is varied and can include security checks at the gate, searching, handling incoming deliveries, supervising visitors, and watching phone activity and CCTV.

Working pattern and environment

The role combines desk-based duties with physically active tasks such as lifting, carrying, and walking across the prison site to escort vehicles. Shifts include weekends and nights, and shift start and finish times are fixed, so reliable travel to and from the workplace is essential.

Travel requirements

The prison may be located in a rural area with limited public transport. A driving licence and access to your own transport can be helpful, although they are not mandatory unless specifically stated. Candidates must hold a full, valid UK driving licence with category D1, which permits driving vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer of up to 750kg.

Who this role suits

No formal qualifications are required. The ideal candidate is a clear communicator who stays composed under pressure, uses sound judgement and common sense, and works well as part of a team. This fast-moving role can be a strong starting point for someone looking to build a career in the prison service.

Career development and impact

Although contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, there may be occasional interaction depending on the establishment. The role offers insight into how a prison functions and may open the door to future opportunities, including progression into other prison jobs and the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.

Training and benefits

Training and development support are provided, along with opportunities to progress in the Civil Service. The package includes 25 days of annual leave on appointment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis, plus 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays. Additional support includes access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.

Pay

The salary for this role is £29,432 per year.
