Diesel Generator Operator

Role overview

This contract position is for a Diesel Generator Operator based onsite in Doha, Qatar. The role involves keeping diesel generator sets and portable air conditioning systems running safely, efficiently, and without interruption, while also supporting maintenance, basic electrical checks, and site safety requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Run and observe diesel generators and portable AC systems in a safe and efficient manner.
• Maintain a dependable power supply by tracking generator performance, load sharing, and fuel levels.
• Carry out standard start-up and shut-down steps in line with operating procedures and safety rules.
• Perform routine preventive and corrective upkeep on DG sets and portable AC units.
• Diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, and control-related issues quickly.
• Work with the maintenance team on major repairs, overhauls, and spare-parts planning.
• Keep detailed records of maintenance work, fuel usage, and equipment performance.
• Use HVAC knowledge to help maintain efficient cooling-system operation.
• Track temperature and humidity and make adjustments when needed.
• Support basic electrical fault finding and system inspections as required.
• Follow all HSE rules, PPE standards, and site safety procedures without exception.
• Comply with client safety requirements and applicable standards.
• Maintain proper operational and safety documentation.
• Escalate any issues, hazards, or equipment failures to the supervisor immediately.

Requirements

• 2 to 3 years of practical experience operating diesel generators and/or portable AC systems.
• Applicants from HVAC Technician or Electrical Technician backgrounds are also suitable if they have DG operating experience.
• Diploma or degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or a related technical certification is required; ITI/Diploma is preferred.
• DG operator certification or a mechanical/electrical trade certificate is preferred but not compulsory.
• Strong understanding of DG operation, control panels, fuel systems, and basic electrical systems.
• Knowledge of portable AC equipment and HVAC fundamentals.
• Ability to read technical manuals, schematics, and equipment instructions.
• Good written and spoken English.
• Must be able to clear an English written test during the hiring process.
• Strong analytical ability, sound judgment, and a team-oriented approach.
• Willingness to work rotating shifts and overtime when needed.
