Job description
Role overview
His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is looking for an Operational Support Grade at HMP Full Sutton. This is a busy, practical role that helps keep the prison operating safely and smoothly day to day. The work is varied and can involve a mix of desk-based duties and physical tasks such as lifting, carrying, and walking across the prison grounds to escort vehicles.
What you will do
You will support the daily running of the prison as part of a team. Typical duties may include security checks at the gate, searching, managing deliveries, supervising visitors, and monitoring phone calls and CCTV. The role is active, fast-moving, and requires someone who can stay composed while dealing with a range of operational tasks.
Travel and attendance
Some prison sites are in rural areas with limited public transport. A driving licence and access to your own transport can be helpful, although they are not a mandatory requirement unless specifically stated for the post. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to travel to and from work punctually for every shift.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are required. This role may suit someone who communicates well, remains calm when under pressure, uses good judgement, and works effectively as part of a team. It is a good entry point for someone looking to build a career in the prison service.
Working pattern and career growth
You will be expected to work a range of shifts, including nights and weekends. The role offers an opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge of prison operations and may open the door to other roles within the prison service, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.
Training, development and benefits
You will receive training and have access to progression and development opportunities. Along with base salary, the package includes annual leave, bank and public holidays, apprenticeship access, pension benefits, travel-related support, discounts, wellbeing support, and cycle-to-work options.
Pay
The advertised salary is £29,432.
Additional benefits
- 25 days of annual leave at the point of joining, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata
- 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays
- Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
- Access to the Civil Service pension scheme
- Season ticket loans
- Retail discounts
- Employee Assistance Programme
- Cycle to Work scheme
