Job description
Role overview
HMP Erlestoke is hiring an Operational Support Grade to help keep a busy prison running safely and efficiently. This is a hands-on support role within a collaborative team, covering a mix of security, front-line support, and general operational tasks.
What the job involves
Day to day, you may be stationed at the gate handling searches and security checks, organising deliveries, supervising visitors, and keeping an eye on phone activity and CCTV. The role combines desk-based duties with physical work such as lifting, carrying, and escorting vehicles around the prison grounds.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are required. The position may suit someone who communicates clearly, stays composed in pressured situations, uses sound judgement, and works well as part of a team. It is a fast-moving role that could be a strong starting point for a career in prisons or public service.
Shifts and working pattern
You should be prepared to work a range of shifts, including nights and weekends, as part of the prison’s operational coverage.
Career growth and experience
This post offers a rare chance to contribute to public safety and support the daily work carried out in prisons. Although prisoner contact is limited compared with prison officers, you may occasionally come into contact with prisoners depending on the site. The role also builds valuable knowledge of prison operations and may open the door to other prison roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this position is £30,491. In addition to base pay, the role includes paid annual leave, public holidays, apprenticeship access, pension benefits, and a range of employee support and discount schemes.
Additional information
This is an extraordinary job carried out by people committed to supporting the smooth and safe running of the prison service. If you are interested in a varied operational role with training and development prospects, this opportunity may be a good fit.
