Job description

Role overview

HMP Bullingdon is seeking an Operational Support Grade to help keep the prison operating safely and efficiently on a day-to-day basis. This is an active, varied role within a supportive team, combining desk-based duties with practical tasks across the establishment.

Key duties

  • Support security checks and searches at the gate.
  • Handle incoming deliveries and related administrative activity.
  • Supervise visitors and help manage movement within the prison.
  • Monitor phone calls and CCTV as part of the wider security process.
  • Carry out tasks that may involve lifting, moving items, walking across the prison site, and escorting vehicles.

Working pattern and travel

The position involves a range of shifts, including nights and weekends. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so punctual travel to and from work is essential. Some prisons are located in rural areas with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, although it is not always mandatory unless specifically stated.

Driving licence requirement

Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence that includes category D1. This category permits driving vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer of up to 750kg.

What makes a good fit

No formal qualifications are needed for this post. The role suits someone who communicates well, stays composed in pressured situations, uses common sense and sound judgement, and works well as part of a team.

Career development

This role offers practical insight into how a prison functions and may open the door to other prison service roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.

Pay and benefits

The salary for this post is £29,432. Alongside base pay, you will receive training and opportunities to progress and develop.

  • 25 days of annual leave on joining, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata.
  • 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays.
  • Access to a paid Level 2 customer service apprenticeship.
  • Access to the Civil Service pension scheme.
  • Season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.

Additional information

As an Operational Support Grade, you will usually have limited contact with prisoners, although occasional interaction may occur depending on the prison. The role contributes to public protection and supports important work carried out across the prison estate.
