Job description

Role overview

HMP Bullingdon is looking for an Operational Support Grade (OSG) to help keep a busy prison running safely and efficiently. This is a varied, active position with a mix of desk-based duties and hands-on tasks.

The work includes supporting security at the gate, carrying out searches, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, checking phone calls and CCTV, and moving around the prison grounds to escort vehicles when needed.

Working arrangements

This post involves fixed shift start and finish times, so you must be able to travel to and from the prison punctually for every shift. The role includes a range of shifts, including weekends and night duty.

The establishment is in a rural area with limited public transport options, so having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, although this is not a compulsory requirement unless specifically stated.

Driving licence requirement

Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence with D1 entitlement. This category allows the holder to drive vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer of up to 750kg.

Candidate profile

No formal qualifications are needed for this position. The prison is seeking someone who communicates well, stays composed under pressure, uses sound judgement, and works effectively as part of a team.

This fast-moving role can be a strong starting point for someone interested in building a career in the prison service.

What the role offers

As an OSG, you will gain practical insight into how a prison operates and may have routes into other prison roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.

The employer provides training along with development and progression opportunities.

Pay and benefits

The salary for this position is £29,432.

Alongside base pay, you will receive 25 days of annual leave at the start, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata. You will also get 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays.

Additional benefits include access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.

Purpose of the role

This job contributes to public safety by helping maintain order and supporting the essential work carried out in prisons. Direct contact with prisoners is limited, although occasional interaction may occur depending on the site.

Additional notes

Only candidates who can meet the full driving licence requirement should apply. Please consider your travel options carefully before taking up this role, especially because shift timings are fixed.

Leave it if you'd like a reply — we won't use it for anything else.
