Job description
Role overview
This position is with His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service at HMP Highpoint. The role offers a salary range of £35,746 to £40,003 and focuses on maintaining public safety while supporting people in custody to make constructive changes in their lives.
The job is fast-moving and varied, with no two days likely to be the same. As you build experience, there may be opportunities to progress and develop into different specialist areas.
Who this role suits
This is not a standard job, and the people who succeed in it often come from very different backgrounds. Experience from areas such as parenting, teaching, retail, or the armed forces can all translate well because the role values empathy, confidence, resilience, and strong communication.
You will need the ability to form professional, respectful, and constructive relationships with offenders, including individuals who may be going through a very difficult period in their lives. A strong sense of teamwork is essential, along with the ability to support colleagues and help maintain safety across the prison environment.
What the work involves
In the course of a single day, you may move between several different responsibilities, from maintaining order and de-escalating situations to offering guidance and support. The role combines elements of security, mentoring, and practical assistance in a distinctive setting where you work directly with prisoners.
Shift work is part of the job, and you should expect to work varying shifts as well as weekends.
Training and progression
You will receive structured training and have access to development opportunities, including the chance to move into more specialised responsibilities over time.
Rewards and benefits
Alongside the salary, the package includes 25 days of annual leave, childcare vouchers, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Beyond the formal benefits, the role can be personally rewarding because it gives you the chance to help someone rebuild their life and make a meaningful difference in the wider community.
Application note
If you believe your qualities match what is needed for this role, you can submit an application.
