Job description
Role overview
This position is for an Operational Support Grade at HMP Bullingdon, where you would help keep the prison operating safely and efficiently each day. The work is practical, varied, and part of a team-based environment, with duties that can range from gate security and search checks to handling deliveries, watching over visitors, and keeping an eye on phone and CCTV activity. The job combines office-based tasks with physically active work, including lifting, carrying, and walking across the prison grounds to escort vehicles.
Pay
The salary for this role is £29,432 per year.
Working pattern and travel
This is a shift-based role and includes weekend and night working. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to travel to the workplace punctually for every shift. The site is in a rural area, so having your own transport and a driving licence may be helpful, although they are not compulsory unless specifically stated.
Driving licence requirement
Applicants must have a full, valid UK driving licence that includes category D1. This allows you to drive vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer weighing up to 750 kg.
What the job involves
You will support the daily running of the prison by carrying out a mix of security-related and administrative tasks. The post involves regular contact with staff and, in some cases, occasional contact with prisoners. It is a fast-moving role that requires steady judgment, clear communication, and a calm approach when under pressure.
Training and progression
Although no qualifications are needed to apply, the role offers structured training and development support. It can also open doors to future opportunities within the prison service, including the chance to move into other prison jobs and potentially apply for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.
Benefits
Alongside base pay, you will receive annual leave entitlement of 25 days on appointment, increasing to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata. You will also get 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays, access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, and the Civil Service pension scheme. Additional support and savings options include season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
