Job description

Role overview

This position is for an Operational Support Grade at HMP Bullingdon, where you will help with the everyday functioning of a busy prison. The work is varied and active, combining office-based duties with hands-on tasks such as carrying items, walking to escort vehicles, and moving around the prison site.

Key duties

  • Handle gate security checks and searches.
  • Oversee incoming deliveries.
  • Supervise visitors.
  • Monitor phone activity and CCTV.
  • Support the safe and smooth running of the prison alongside the wider team.

Working pattern

This role includes a range of shifts, with weekends and nights as part of the rota. Start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to travel to work reliably and arrive on time.

Travel to work

Some prison sites are in rural areas with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, though this is not a mandatory requirement unless specifically stated. You should think carefully about the site location and your commuting options before applying.

Driving licence requirement

Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence that includes category D1. This allows driving vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum vehicle length of 8 metres, and a trailer weighing up to 750kg.

What we are looking for

No formal qualifications are needed. The ideal candidate will communicate well, stay calm in pressured situations, use sound judgement, show common sense, and work well as part of a team.

Career development

This role can build valuable knowledge of prison operations and may open doors to other roles within the prison service, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.

Training and benefits

You will receive strong training and opportunities to develop and progress. Alongside basic pay, the package includes annual leave, public holidays, apprenticeship access, pension support, and a range of employee benefits.

Additional information

Base salary for this position is £29,432.

Unlike prison officers, contact with prisoners is limited, although you may have occasional interaction depending on the establishment.

  • 25 days of annual leave on appointment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated on a pro-rata basis.
  • 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays.
  • Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service.
  • Eligibility for the Civil Service pension scheme, plus season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.

If this role matches your skills and interests, you are encouraged to apply.

Leave it if you'd like a reply — we won't use it for anything else.
