Job description

Role overview

HMP Bullingdon is recruiting an Operational Support Grade (OSG) to help keep the prison running safely and efficiently. This is a busy, hands-on position where you will support daily operations and contribute to a secure environment.

What the job involves

You will work as part of a team carrying out a broad mix of duties. These may include security checks and searches at the gate, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, and observing phone activity and CCTV. The role combines desk-based tasks with active physical work such as lifting, carrying, and walking to escort vehicles across the prison grounds.

Working pattern

This position includes a range of shifts, with weekend and night working required. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to travel to work reliably and arrive on time.

Travel and transport

Some prison sites are in rural areas with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, though it is not always mandatory unless specifically stated. Applicants should think carefully about the location and whether they can manage the commute for every shift.

Driving licence requirement

Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence that includes category D1. This allows driving vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer up to 750 kg.

Who this role suits

No formal qualifications are needed. This role may suit someone who communicates well, stays calm when under pressure, uses sound judgement, and works well as part of a team. It is a fast-moving environment and could be a strong starting point for a career in the prison service.

Career development

The OSG role offers valuable insight into how a prison operates and can open doors to other positions within the prison service, including the opportunity to apply for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.

Pay and benefits

The annual salary for this role is £29,432. In addition to base pay, you will receive training and development opportunities, annual leave starting at 25 days and rising to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis, 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays, access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, and benefits such as the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.

Additional notes

Contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, although there may be occasional interaction depending on the establishment. This role supports the wider public protection mission by helping ensure prison operations continue smoothly and safely.
