Job description

Role overview

At HMP Bullingdon, the Operational Support Grade helps maintain the smooth and safe running of a busy prison. This position is hands-on and varied, combining desk-based duties with practical work around the establishment.

What the job involves

You will support day-to-day operations by carrying out tasks such as gate security checks and searches, overseeing deliveries, supervising visitors, and monitoring phone activity and CCTV. The work can involve moving between different areas of the prison, including escorting vehicles across the grounds and handling lifting, carrying, and walking duties.

Travel and attendance

Some prison sites are in rural areas with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, though it is not always mandatory unless specifically stated for the post. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to arrive and leave on time for every shift.

Driving licence requirement

Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence that includes Category D1. This category allows driving vehicles with no more than 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer weighing up to 750kg.

Who this role suits

No formal qualifications are needed. The role is well suited to someone who communicates clearly, stays composed under pressure, uses good judgement, and works well as part of a team. It is a fast-moving role and can be a strong entry point into a career within the prison service.

Working pattern

You will be expected to work a rotating schedule that includes weekend and night shifts.

Career development

This role offers an opportunity to gain practical understanding of how a prison operates and can open pathways into other prison service roles, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.

Training and benefits

You will receive training and support for development and progression. In addition to base pay, the package includes annual leave, public holidays, apprenticeship access, pension support, and a range of staff benefits.

Additional benefits

  • 25 days of annual leave at the start of employment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata
  • 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays
  • Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
  • Access to the Civil Service pension scheme
  • Season ticket loans
  • Retail discounts
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Cycle to Work scheme
