Job description

Role overview

HM Prison and Probation Service is hiring an Operational Support Grade at HMP Bullingdon. The role sits within a busy prison environment and supports the daily operation of the establishment through a mix of security, reception, and general operational duties.

This position pays £29,432.

What the job involves

You’ll be part of a team that keeps the prison running efficiently and safely. The work is varied and active, blending desk-based tasks with hands-on duties such as carrying items, walking across the site, and escorting vehicles around the prison grounds.

  • Carry out searches and security checks at the gate
  • Handle deliveries and movement of goods
  • Supervise visitors
  • Monitor phone activity and CCTV
  • Support day-to-day prison operations

Working conditions

The role includes fixed shift start and finish times, so reliable transport to and from work on time is essential. Some prison sites are in rural areas with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, though it is not always a mandatory requirement unless specifically stated.

Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence that includes the D1 category, which permits driving vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer of up to 750kg.

You should also be prepared to work a range of shifts, including evenings, nights, and weekends.

Who this role suits

No formal qualifications are needed. This is a strong fit for someone who communicates clearly, stays composed when situations become pressurised, uses sound judgement, and works well as part of a team.

Although direct contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, you may interact with prisoners from time to time depending on the establishment.

Career development and benefits

This role offers a practical introduction to how a prison operates and can open doors to other prison-based roles. It may also support future progression, including the opportunity to apply for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.

You will receive training and development support, along with a benefits package that includes paid leave, public holidays, apprenticeship access, pension benefits, and employee wellbeing and lifestyle schemes.

Additional pay and benefits

  • 25 days of annual leave when you start, increasing to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata
  • 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays
  • Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
  • Membership of the Civil Service pension scheme
  • Season ticket loans
  • Retail discounts
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Cycle to Work scheme
