Job description
About the role
His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is hiring prison officers for HMP Highpoint. This is a challenging, fast-moving position where you can contribute to public safety while helping individuals make better choices and move toward positive change.
The role suits people with strong character, sound judgement, integrity and the resilience to handle changing situations. As you build experience, there will be opportunities to progress and broaden your responsibilities within the service.
Who this role suits
There is no single background for a prison officer. People who have worked in areas such as teaching, parenting, retail or the armed forces may already have developed the empathy, confidence and communication abilities needed for the job.
You will need to form respectful, constructive and professional working relationships with prisoners, including people who may be at a very difficult point in their lives. A strong team mindset is essential, as you will work closely with colleagues to help keep the prison, prisoners and staff safe.
What the work involves
This is a varied role where your duties can change several times in a single day. You may find yourself acting as a calming presence, offering guidance, or supporting learning and rehabilitation activity. The work is hands-on and directly involved with prisoners in a secure environment.
You must be prepared to work different shift patterns and weekends.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this position is £35,746 to £40,003. In addition to pay, the service offers 25 days of annual leave, childcare vouchers, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme and a Cycle to Work scheme.
You will also receive training and development support, with opportunities to progress and specialise in different areas. The role can be deeply rewarding, particularly when you help someone take steps toward a more stable future.
