Job description

Role overview

HMP Highpoint is hiring prison officers to work in a demanding, fast-moving environment where the main focus is public protection and supporting people to make positive changes in their lives. This role suits someone with integrity, resilience, sound judgement and strong interpersonal skills.

Every day in this position can look different. As you build experience, there will be chances to broaden your responsibilities and progress into different specialist areas.

Who this role suits

There is no single background for a prison officer. People who have worked in fields such as parenting, teaching, retail or the armed forces may already have developed the empathy, confidence and communication abilities needed for the job. The role calls for someone who can form respectful, constructive and professional relationships with offenders, including people who may be at a very low point in their lives.

Because safety depends on close cooperation, you must be committed to working as part of a team and helping to keep the prison, offenders and colleagues secure.

What the work involves

This is a varied frontline role where you may move between several duties in a single shift. At times you may need to act as a calm negotiator, a mentor, a guide or a teacher, depending on the situation and the needs of the people in your care.

You will work directly with prisoners in a unique environment where your work contributes to public safety and rehabilitation.

Working pattern

You must be prepared to work different shifts, including weekends.

Pay and benefits

The salary range for this position is £35,746 to £40,003. Alongside pay, the role includes 25 days of annual leave each year, childcare vouchers, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme and a Cycle to Work scheme.

Training and development

You will receive strong training and support, with opportunities to progress and develop over time, including the option to specialise in different areas.

Why this job matters

Beyond the practical rewards, the role offers the satisfaction of helping someone begin to rebuild their life, which can be a meaningful experience unlike many other careers.
